Responsible Business Practices

Benchmark is a member of the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC).

The RJC is a standards-setting organization established to advance responsible ethical, human rights, social and environmental practices throughout the gold, silver, platinum group metals, diamond, and colored gemstone jewelry supply chain.

The RJC has developed a benchmark standard for the jewelry supply chain and credible mechanisms for verifying responsible business practices through third-party auditing.

As an RJC member, we commit to operating our business in accordance with the RJC Code of Practices. We commit to integrating ethical, human rights, social, and environmental considerations into our day-to-day operations, business planning activities, and decision-making processes. This includes, but is not limited to, a commitment to never engage in or knowingly support child labor (including the worst forms of child labor) as defined by International Labour Organisation (ILO) conventions 138 and 182, and to never engage in or knowingly support forced labor as defined by International Labour Organisation (ILO) convention 29, including bonded labor, deceptive recruitment, human trafficking, and indentured or involuntary prison labor. We commit that we do not engage in or tolerate bribery, corruption, money laundering, or financing of terrorism.

Supply Chain Policy

This policy confirms Benchmark's commitment to respect human rights, avoid contributing to the finance of conflict and comply with all relevant UN sanctions, resolutions, and laws. Benchmark is a member of the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC), and as such, we commit that we:

  1. respect human rights according to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and International Labour Organization Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work;
  2. do not engage in or tolerate bribery, corruption, money laundering or finance of terrorism;
  3. support transparency of government payments and rights-compatible security forces in the extractives industry;
  4. do not provide direct or indirect support to illegal armed groups;
  5. enable stakeholders to voice concerns about the jewelry supply chain; and
  6. are implementing the OECD five-step framework as a management process for risk-based due diligence for responsible supply chains of minerals from conflict-affected and high-risk areas.

We also commit to using our influence to prevent abuses by others. We will conduct an annual risk assessment in accordance to OECD guidance of all suppliers of precious metals, diamonds, and gemstones. Executive members will meet to identify and assess risks and assign a risk level. For any risk assessed to be at an unacceptable status, the executive members will establish an action plan to work with the supplier to mitigate the risk. In the event that mitigation is unsuccessful, alternative actions, up to termination of business relationship will be taken.

Regarding serious abuses associated with the extraction, transport or trade of minerals

We will neither tolerate nor profit from, contribute to, assist or facilitate the commission of:

  1. torture, cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment;
  2. forced or compulsory labor;
  3. the worst forms of child labor;
  4. human rights violations and abuses; or
  5. war crimes, violations of international humanitarian law, crimes against humanity or genocide.

We will immediately stop engaging with upstream suppliers if we find a reasonable risk that they are committing any of the serious abuses described above, or are sourcing from, or linked to, any party committing these abuses.

Regarding direct or indirect support to non-state armed groups

We only buy or sell diamonds that are fully compliant with the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme and, as such, will not tolerate direct or indirect support to non-state armed groups, including, but not limited to, procuring diamonds from, making payments to, or otherwise helping or equipping non-state armed groups or their affiliates who illegally:

  1. control mine sites, transportation routes, points where diamonds are traded and upstream actors in the supply chain; or
  2. tax or extort money or diamonds at mine sites, along transportation routes or at points where diamonds are traded, or

from intermediaries, export companies or international traders.

We will immediately stop engaging with upstream suppliers if we find a reasonable risk that they are sourcing from, or are linked to, any party providing direct or indirect support to non-state armed groups as described above.

Regarding public or private security forces

We affirm that the role of public or private security forces is to provide security to workers, facilities, equipment, and property in accordance with the rule of law, including law that guarantees human rights. We will not provide direct or indirect support to public or private security forces that commit abuses described above or that act illegally as described above.

Regarding bribery and fraudulent misrepresentation of the origin of minerals

We will not offer, promise, give or demand bribes, and will resist the solicitation of bribes, to conceal or disguise the origin of minerals, or to misrepresent taxes, fees and royalties paid to governments for the purposes of extraction, trade, handling, transport and export of minerals.

Regarding money laundering

We will support and contribute to efforts to eliminate money laundering where we identify a reasonable risk resulting from, or connected to, the extraction, trade, handling, transport or export of minerals.

Sustainability Report

Benchmark Wedding Rings was founded by Tom Tosyali with the goal of producing the finest wedding rings in the world- the Benchmark of wedding rings. Mr. Tosyali started his first factory in the back room of a small retail store with nothing but a lathe and a polishing station. It was here that he developed and manufactured what would become the very first Benchmark rings- with Mr. Tosyali himself traveling the country to sell them. Through his hard work and dedication, Benchmark has continued to grow and gain its reputation as an elite ring manufacturer.

Benchmark is proud to be part of a dying breed of U.S.-based manufacturers. Manufacturing excellence is at the core of our company, and it is our goal to produce rings that are well-engineered, aesthetically pleasing, and socially and environmentally conscious. As a commitment to social and environmental responsibility, Benchmark joined the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC) in 2019. The RJC is a standards-setting organization established to advance responsible ethical, human rights, social and environmental practices throughout the gold, silver, platinum group metals, and diamond and colored gemstone jewelry supply chain. The RJC has developed a benchmark standard for the jewelry supply chain and credible mechanisms for verifying responsible business practices through third-party auditing.

As an RJC member, we commit to operating our business in accordance with the RJC Code of Practices. We commit to integrating ethical, human rights, social and environmental considerations into our day-to-day operations, business planning activities, and decision-making processes. Benchmark regularly reviews not only our company policies but also our daily operations to ensure that our core values are fully embedded into our practices. Despite the unique challenges presented by the global COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, we were able to implement new and strengthen existing policies and procedures to further align ourselves with the RJC Code of Practices on our path to becoming a certified member of the RJC. This momentum carried through the following years and has helped us recognize opportunities for continued improvement.

In 2022, while continuing to enhance our business practices as a whole, Benchmark chose to focus on getting to better know our suppliers to ensure their practices align with our goals. Through an enhanced supply chain policy, supplier questionnaires, risk assessments, and open communication, Benchmark has confidence that our suppliers are equally dedicated to socially and environmentally responsible business practices. By implementing annual supplier questionnaires, we were able to determine that over half of our suppliers of precious metals and diamonds are current members of the RJC. Those that are not members of the RJC have documented practices in place to ensure that their supply chain is conflict-free. Our expanded Supply Chain Policy was sent out to all of our precious metals and diamond suppliers in an effort to clearly communicate our expectations for ethically and responsibly sourced materials. Risk assessments were carried out on suppliers following our due diligence processes that have been enhanced over the last year, and it was determined there were no notable risks to upholding the standards set out in our Supply Chain Policy. As our business continues to grow and evolve, we remain committed to strengthening our relationships with responsible business partners and encouraging others to examine their own business structures for opportunities to develop a solid stance on responsible sourcing.

To further our commitment to responsible business practices, our goal for the future is to evaluate our environmental practices in depth. On our path to becoming a certified member of the RJC, we have found opportunities to enhance our environmental practices. Through employee training, research, and goal development we hope to set science-based targets to help limit our impact on climate change. Benchmark already has existing policies in place to minimize our environmental impact such as using recycled gold, recycling all of our precious metals scrap, internal re-use procedures for paper waste, and hazardous waste disposal protocols. We hope to integrate new procedures and strengthen existing policies over the next year to minimize not only our impact to the climate internally but also through our business partners. We will examine our business relationships for opportunities to positively influence our partners to implement and reinforce their own environmental standards.
